Context
Art Belongs to Spiritual Life
In the aesthetic theory of Richard Wagner (1813-1883), Gesamtkunstwerk is "an ideal work of art in which drama, music, and other performing arts are integrated and each is subservient to the whole."
The idea is to unify different art forms to achieve a noble and innovative artistic whole that can change lives and benefit society.
Wassily Kandinsky wrote in “Concerning the Spiritual in Art”: “Society’s obsession with material things and ever-increasing selfishness is the cause of chaos and bloodshed.”
Debussy never used the “material notes” to program music but achieved his works through creating abstract impressions.
Materialism and the Display of Wealth are Prevalent Trends Today
In our modern eras, people's spiritual life is still being eroded by increasingly prevalent materialism.
